Chapter Six

Early the next night when they were dressing to go to dinner, Jack could tell that Taejon was nervous. His fingers fumbled as he tried to button his shirt, and he wasn’t satisfied with the way he looked, but there was something else, Jack could tell.

“Maybe we shouldn’t go. I’m afraid I’ll embarrass you.” “Nonsense,” Jack said as he turned and helped Taejon button up his shirt.

“You spend too much money on me, Jack.”

“Why? Because I bought you these clothes? It’s not so much. Besides, I just used the money we’ve been able to put back for a rainy day.”

“You stole from the…”

“No, no, I didn’t steal anything, I borrowed. I figure as long as it’s to help you, it’s not stealing. Anyway, since my credit cards are of no use to me anymore, I had to do something to get you a few things. It hardly made a dent in our surplus dollars. After all, you couldn’t go to dinner in your loincloth, and the other clothes don’t fit…for whatever reason.”

“I too big.”

Jack looked at Taejon with a reprimand in his eyes. “Say that again?”

“I…am too big.”

“Fine,” Jack said. “The worst thing you can do is get excited and forget how to speak. Now tonight we’ll go over etiquette at the table. The right fork, spoon, and knife at the right time with the right dish.”

“Ohhhh,” Taejon moaned, looking miserable.

“You’ll learn how to speak, eat, and conduct yourself in public.” “I like eat with fingers.”

Jack’s eyes shot up to Taejon’s face. “Taejon, are you going to do this or not? Have I spent these last few weeks with you, only to have you revert back to your old ways?”

“I…no…I will not go back. I…promise.”

“Taejon,” Jack said, looking at him worriedly. “Are you okay? Your speech, it’s getting disjointed again. You need to get hold of yourself.”

Taejon suddenly became dead serious as he looked at Jack. “Hello. My name is Taejon. I am very glad to meet you.” He jutted out his hand and caught Jack’s and began pumping it up and down. “Good-bye…have a good day…good night…sweet dreams…” He looked up into an imaginary sky. “It looks like rain. Sun…The sun will shine tomorrow.”

“Taejon, snap out of it.”

“See?” Taejon said as he looked at Jack. “I remember plea…san…tries.” He shook his head. “Not going back. Go forward. Always go forward.” His eyes shifted beyond Jack and seemed to penetrate his surroundings as he gazed into the distance. “Dream out there. Must have dream. Big, big dream.”

The word dream triggered something in Jack, making him think of what the witch had said to him. “Taejon, what is this dream everyone keeps talking about?”

Taejon’s face took on a sad look. “Witch say circus coming back. I wait…wish…hope.”

Both pain and anger flooded Jack at once, causing him to force back a biting remark when he thought of the way the old witch was leading the people on with this absurd story. Instead, to keep Taejon from seeing how it affected him, he lowered his gaze, smoothed his shirt down, and patted his chest.
